Maggiore Lake

The second largest in Italy

Lake Maggiore or Verbano is a lake of fluvioglacial and pre-Alpine origin and is the second largest in Italy. In fact, its name does not indicate that it is the largest in the country, but the largest in its area. It is also the second lake in terms of depth, after that of Como.

It shares its shores between Italy and Switzerland, although 80% extends across Italian territory. In the lake there are several islands, of different sizes, distributed between Piedmont, Lombardy and Switzerland, for a total of 11 islands.

Among the islands there are also numerous castles and well-known villas. largely visitable, as well as numerous museums, gardens and nature parks.

Depending on your specific interests, therefore, you can take one of the numerous ferries that connect the mainland to one of the islands and visit one or more of these places of interest.

Some pearls not to be missed are: the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a monastery built on the rock and dating back to the 12th century; the Sacro Monte di Ghiffa, which rises along the wooded slopes of Mount Cargiago and which is a UNESCO heritage site and included in the World Heritage List; the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, from the fifteenth century; the Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo and, finally, Mottarone, also known as the Mountain of the Two Lakes, which is the highest relief of the Vergante (it is also known as the ski season in winter).

Lake Maggiore is therefore a very vast territory, all to explore: just choose your favorite destination.
