Lake Como is a bifid fjord, located at an altitude of 197.39 meters above sea level. Deeply dug into the mountain slopes of the Como pre-Alps. It has a very complex geometry with a characteristic inverted "Y" shape or, as a widespread local saying goes.
«Lake Como has the shape of a man, one leg in Lecco and the other in Como, the nose in Domaso and the bottom in Bellagio.»
Deep
It is the deepest lake in Italy measuring 410 meters between Argegno and Nesso and fifth in Europe. Its seabed is in cryptodepression. In Italy it is also the one with the largest perimeter extension measuring 170 km, third in terms of surface area with 145 km² and volume with 23.37 km3. It reaches a length of 45.7 km from Gera Lario to Como. Its minimum width is 650 meters between Careno and Torriggia and maximum 4.2 km between Cadenabbia and Fiumelatte.
Suggestive
It is one of the most evocative Italian landscapes, praised in the 19th century by the major poets of Romanticism. Alessandro Manzoni, Stendhal, George Gordon Byron and Franz Liszt. The morphology of the territory varies from rounded and grassy slopes to dolomites with toothed rocks, spiers and towers. Alluvial deposits, transported by rivers and streams, began to form with the post-glaciation and were the cause of the separation of the smaller lakes.
Like Lake Mezzola to the north and the lakes of Garlate and Olginate to the south. The eastern coast of the Como branch is particularly typical, impervious and covered in woods. The villages are still made up of ancient houses perched between the lake and the mountains, with steep coastal stairways.
